Over two million people live in the Las Vegas valley, and most rarely go to the Strip. Locals come for jobs, no state income tax, sunshine and outdoor space.

Pros

  • No state income tax in Nevada.
  • Housing cheaper than most of California.
  • Mild winters and sunshine almost every day.
  • Red Rock, Mount Charleston, Lake Mead and national parks within a few hours.
  • A big entertainment and sports scene (Raiders, Golden Knights, Aces).

Cons

  • Summer heat: three months over 100 °F.
  • The economy depends heavily on tourism and hospitality.
  • Schools vary widely: research individual schools in the Clark County School District, charters and private options.
  • Car-dependent outside the Strip.
  • Water: the region relies on Lake Mead, and grass lawns are restricted.

Where to live

Getting set up

  • Driver’s licence: new residents must get a Nevada licence within 30 days and register their car within 60 days at the DMV.
  • Utilities: NV Energy (electricity), Southwest Gas, and the Las Vegas Valley Water District or your city’s water service.
  • Voter registration and car insurance at the same time as the DMV.
