Where to stay
- Centre Strip (between the Venetian and Park MGM) is best for a first visit: you can walk to most of the famous sights. See the Strip, mile by mile.
- South Strip (MGM Grand to Mandalay Bay) has big pools and good-value rooms, with free trams between Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay.
- North Strip (Wynn, Resorts World, Fontainebleau, Sahara) is newer and calmer but further from the centre.
- Downtown (Fremont Street) is cheaper and old-school, 15 to 20 minutes from the Strip.
How long?
Three nights is the sweet spot for a first visit: one day for the Strip, one for a day trip (Red Rock or Hoover Dam) and one for whatever you liked most. Weekends cost noticeably more than weekdays.
Distances are deceptive
The resorts are enormous. Walking from one front door to the next can take 10 to 15 minutes, and the Strip is about 4 miles long. Use our walk calculator and the Monorail, the free trams, the Deuce bus or rideshare.
Money
- Resort fees are added per night to most Strip hotels. Since May 2025 the total price must be shown up front when you book. See resort fees explained.
- Tipping is expected for most services. See tipping in Las Vegas.
- Parking at most Strip resorts is paid.
The free stuff
The Bellagio fountains, the Conservatory, Fremont Street’s light shows, the Flamingo wildlife habitat, Circus Circus acts and the Welcome sign cost nothing. Full list: free things to do, and the free show times.
Shows
Book big shows and Sphere events in advance. Same-day discount booths sell remaining seats for many shows.
Heat and health
From June to September daytime temperatures often pass 100 °F (38 °C). Carry water, and avoid long walks in the afternoon. See surviving the summer heat.
Safety
The Strip is busy and well policed, but watch for pickpockets in crowds and keep drinks with you. Use licensed taxis or rideshare.
