Hoover Dam was finished in 1936 and still supplies water and power across the Southwest. You can walk across its top, tour inside, and see the whole structure from the memorial bridge that carries US-93 past it.
What to do
- Walk across the dam (you cross a time zone in winter: Arizona does not use daylight saving)
- Take the Dam Tour or Power Plant Tour
- Walk the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for the classic view
- Combine with Boulder City and Lake Mead
Fees: Paid parking in the garage; tours and the visitor centre are ticketed. Walking across the top of the dam is free.
Tip: Security checks apply to vehicles entering the dam area. Go early to beat tour buses and the heat.
Heat and safety
Carry at least a gallon (4 litres) of water per person for a desert day, a hat and sunscreen. Phone signal is patchy outside town: download maps before you go and tell someone your plan. From June to September, finish any hiking by mid-morning.
