Grand Canyon West is managed by the Hualapai Tribe. It is the quickest canyon trip from Las Vegas, best known for the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge 4,000 feet above the canyon floor.
What to do
- Skywalk at Eagle Point
- Guano Point views
- Helicopter tours from Las Vegas (expensive)
Fees: Run by the Hualapai Tribe, not the National Park Service: entry packages are bought separately, and the Skywalk costs extra.
Tip: It is not the national park. If you want the classic Grand Canyon views and hiking, the South Rim is worth the longer drive or an overnight.
Heat and safety
Carry at least a gallon (4 litres) of water per person for a desert day, a hat and sunscreen. Phone signal is patchy outside town: download maps before you go and tell someone your plan. From June to September, finish any hiking by mid-morning.
How to spend the day
- Go early: the drive is about two and a half hours.
- Buy entry at Grand Canyon West, which is run by the Hualapai Tribe.
- Visit Eagle Point and Guano Point.
Bring
- ID and payment for entry packages
- Water and snacks
