Las Vegas on a budget

Las Vegas can be cheap or spectacularly expensive. The difference is mostly timing, location and knowing what is free.

When to go

  • Stay Sunday to Thursday: weekend room rates are often double.
  • Avoid big conventions (check the LVCC calendar), New Year’s Eve, F1 week and major fight nights.
  • July and August are hot but often cheapest mid-week.

Where to stay

  • Compare total prices including resort fees.
  • Downtown, the north Strip and older south Strip hotels are cheaper.

Free things

Bellagio fountains and Conservatory, Fremont Street light shows, Flamingo Wildlife Habitat, Circus Circus acts, the Welcome sign, Sphere’s exterior, and window-shopping in the Forum Shops and Grand Canal Shoppes. See our free list.

Eating cheaply

  • Food halls and casual counters inside resorts.
  • Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road.
  • Downtown restaurants.
  • Bring a refillable bottle; buy water at a pharmacy, not the minibar.

Getting around

Walk and use the free trams; buy a Deuce or Monorail pass for longer distances; share rideshares.

Gambling

Set a limit before you start. Table minimums are higher on the Strip at night and on weekends; downtown has lower minimums.
